PHILADELPHIA (NRD) –Sailors from Navy Recruiting District Philadelphia, along with other Sailors, Soldiers and Troops performed as honor guard for the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Centers (CJC) press conference, March 3 to signify the opening of the Philadelphia Veterans Court.
The Philadelphia Veterans Court is collaboration between the Veterans Administration (VA) and the public defender’s office to assist current and prior Service members that have found themselves in trouble with the law and provide them with services to get back on their feet.
District Attorney of Philadelphia, Seth Williams says it is a great way to assist veterans in turning a new leaf.
“I think this is a tremendous opportunity for us to provide needed services for veterans, who might have gone astray and been arrested,” said Williams. “We owe it to them, to give them the help they may need so they don’t end up coming back through the doors of the CJC. Whether it is drug or alcohol rehabilitation, life skills and job training, housing or other services they need. I think it really helps to prevent crime and preventing crime is more important than just crime prosecution.”
Williams, also a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, feels very strongly about protecting those who have protected the country.
“These men and women, who come into the veterans court, are the most deserving of all of our defendants,” said Williams. “We need to ensure that they get the services they deserve for defending our country.”
