The new silver coin honoring Disabled American Veterans is more than just a keepsake. A portion of its proceeds will be used to construct the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, D.C.
And the funds are already coming in.
During the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life commemorative’s first week of sales, collectors bought 66,209 proof silver $1 coins and 32,149 uncirculated silver $1 coins.
The coin will only be issued in 2010 and has a maximum mintage of 350,000.
The first commemorative coin issued in 2010 was officially released Feb. 25 at a reception at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington.
“The coin is a reminder forever of the brave servicemen and women who risked, and continue to risk, their lives in defense of our country’s liberty,” said Arthur Wilson, DAV national adjutant and president of the Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation. which hosted the launch ceremony. “Each coin sold brings us one step closer to building a permanent, national memorial to disabled veterans.”
A $10 surcharge is authorized to go directly to aid in the construction of the memorial. It will be the first in Washington, D.C. dedicated to living disabled veterans across all service branches and all areas of conflict.
